What’s New
xAuth
There’s been a lot of really geeky blogging about OAuth and xAuth lately. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with more. Let’s just say it’s a good thing and tell you what it means to you: tweets will now be attributed to Kiwi instead of “from web,” you can now see Kiwi authorization in your Twitter settings, and lots of other geeky security reasons that you’ll have to read about here.
Retweets
Kiwi supported the new retweet from version 1.0, but in Kiwi 1.2 we’re adding a lot of polish to help make retweets stand out from the crowd. You’ll be able to see the original author as well as the the person you follow that sent the retweet. Plus there’s even a new timeline so that you can quickly see all the retweets, all at once. Plus we’ve added a lot of hooks for themes. That way your favorite theme can display the retweet just the way you like.
Usernames and Real Names
There seems to be two camps of people, those that like screen names and those that like to see the real name of the people they follow. Kiwi can now do either and even both if you want. Problem solved, you’ll have to go back to fighting about vi and emacs.
More Inline Images
We’ve added more support for inline image preview to Ember, Brizzly, and Twitrpix image URLs. We’re always on the lookout for more image services. Let us know if we’re not supporting yours.
What’s Fixed
Faster
Kiwi was never one of the slow Twitter clients, but we thought we could do better. So with lots of testings and optimization we’ve made just about everything feel faster: Faster startup, faster first timeline load, smoother animations, faster scrolling, … Seriously, just about everything is faster. Some things are a lot faster.
The last 1%
There are many more little fixes: better growl support, fixes for rules, fixes for hash-tags, fixes to themes, etc. You probably won’t notice any of these little things right away, but hopefully the overall feeling of the app.
New for themes
Templates, Styles, and Buttons
There’s a lot of new additions to the theme API. They allow you to take advantage of the new retweet styles, the new Kiwi attribution from xAuth, and some other additions, just to help you make your theme stand out, like direct message styles and favorite buttons. You can read all the details in the new and improved API Docs.
